If you haven’t tried this strategy yet, you need to explore it. One of the keys is to get a keyword-rich vanity URL. Unlike domain names, for which all of the potentially profitable keywords in every niche were gobbled up long ago, the well for Facebook fan page vanity URLs is relatively untapped.

You can get a vanity URL for your Facebook page by going to the admin panel, and choosing the “edit page” dropdown under the manage button. Then look for the “Basic Information” link in the left column of that page:

You’ll see a row for “Username,” where you can create a vanity URL for the page. This is where you can take a URL that looks like this:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/my-Facebook-page/118968191483563

and turn it into something like this:

https://www.facebook.com/myFacebookpage

The latter is certainly easier to type into a browser, if nothing else. But the real opportunity for marketers is in the keyword-rich vanity URLs you can give to your page(s). Because Facebook is recognized by Google as an authority site, Facebook’s pages get a natural lift in search engine rankings without any optimization. WITH optimization, these things can rank very highly, even for competitive keywords.

For example, we were proud to announce earlier this week that our Facebook page for our viral social coupons product has made it to number one overall in Google organic listings for the search term “social coupons,” which has 205 million competing pages, according to Google.

We are using Facebook pages to get first-page rankings for keywords for which the .com, .net and .org domain names were gone long ago. Just like websites, you need to create content on your Facebook pages that will draw in and then convert browsers into clickers.

Important note: Part of planning your Facebook page name is to make sure the vanity URL is still available through Facebook. After all, there are about 800 million other people out there using the site. If you plan a strategy around a vanity URL that is not available, it is a waste of time and frustrating.

It’s easy to find out if your desired vanity URL is available. Go to any browser and type in:

https://www.facebook.com/YOUR-DESIRED-PHRASE-HERE.

Go to that URL, and if you get a message like this:

it’s actually a good thing because that page does not yet exist. If your desired vanity URL takes you to an existing page, you can’t use it. Someone else has already claimed it, and there is no market for selling, leasing, trading or bartering rights to Facebook pages. It’s against the Facebook terms of service.

For the jingle, just singing “E-O-B-S-dot-biz” was $5, but the addition of instrumental and harmony tracks was an extra $20. For something we plan to use over and over, as a part of audio branding, it was well worth it, and she did a great job!
